Vietnam / Hué / The Emperor's City

The emperor's city, a square citadel of 600 metres length to each side, is the most important historical attraction of Hué and probably the most important historical attraction in all of Vietnam. The emperor's city was built in 1804 exactly after the model of the palace city in Beijing.

A roughly square inside area of about 300 metres to each side was the forbidden city, which only the emperor and his immediate court were allowed to enter. The entire imperial city is surrounded by a 7 to 10-metre thick wall.

The forbidden city inside is again surrounded by a one meter strong wall. However, the buildings inside the forbidden city were for the most part destroyed during the Communist Tet offensive and the reconquest by South Vietnamese and American troops in 1968.
