South
Thailand / Regional Division
In this database
the part of Thailand reaching into the Malayan peninsula is understood
as "South Thailand". This definition may be geographically
most obvious (for which reason the editors have decided in favour
of it), but it is not official. According to the politically motivated
administrative division of Thailand, the region of South Thailand
is defined as the area stretching from the Isthmus of Kra near
Chumpon, 460 kilometres to the South of Bangkok, to the Thai-Malaysian
border.
The sea east
of the region is the Gulf of Thailand and the sea to the West
is the Andaman Sea of the Indian Ocean.
