National
Flag
Before 1917
the Thai flag was red with a white elephant, an emblem
of the absolute monarchy. It was changed by King Vajiravudh
(Rama VI) in 1917 when Siam entered World War I on the side of
the Allies. Today's flag consists of five horizontal bands of
red, white and blue. The three colors represent
the three pillars of the Thai nation. The outer red bands stand
for the country, white for Buddhism and blue for
the monarchy.
