For example young Muslim men never can get girls in the UK. So they become suicide bombers. Because then, in paradise, they can have many wives, and they are virgins every day."

Dambulla / Attractions
Dambulla is a vast isolated rock mass 500 feet high with a circumference of one mile at the base. It has five caves at the summit which is attained after a climb of 350 feet. The first and the smallest houses a 47 feet image of The Recumbent Buddha and other deities of Buddhism. There are 200 to 500 year old frescoes on the wall. In the second cave, the most spectacular of them all, are no less than 150 images of The Buddha and other gods, including one of King Valagambahu himself, ranged around a little dagoba. The walls and the ceilings are a feast of paintings depicting scenes from The Buddha's life and significant events in Sinhalese history. The over 1,800 square metres of painted walls and ceilings that constitute the interior of the giant caves of Dambulla were retouched, redrawn or repainted for the last time in the 18th century. Today, they are as fresh and alive as they were 200 years ago. Until recently one could see these ingenious products of Sri Lanka's artistic skills by the flicker of an oil lamp amidst the scent of flowers offered by pilgrims at all times. The damage to the paintings from the soot of these oil camps and the incense has, to some extent, been controlled with precautionary measures. But visitors have increased tenfold in the last decade or so. The painting technique, which conforms to the norms of the time for temple murals could be described as a form of visual shorthand. The picture are meant to help viewers recall narratives they are already familiar with. The subject matter pictorially displayed in this enormous painted area can, therefore, cover a dozen or more volumes of written material. ********** If a shipment has been lost, we send a replacement 30 days after the first shipment has been dispatched. ********** |
