Kandy is the stronghold of Sinhalese art. Vibrant and energetic Kandyan dances are highly appreciated at cultural shows for their movements and also for the exotic attires. Among the handicrafts available are mats, wood carvings, handlooms, batik, lacquer work, ceramics and silverware from Nattaranpotha. There are several handicraft shops where one can see traditional craftsmen at work and pick up a variety of souvenirs including the colorful Kandyan dance masks. There are also plenty of gem shops which apart from offering good quality gems also educate you on the intricacies of the varieties existing and the processes that go into producing a finished product by means of video shows and guided tours. Of course, the bazaars overflowing with fresh vegetables, fruits and spices are alive with activity.
