Singapore has more than 10,000 air-conditioned taxis, including the unique London cabs, operated by five different companies. Rates are reasonable and standard among all taxi companies. The initial flag-down meter fare is $2.40, which covers the first 1.5km. The fare then rises at 10 cents for every 240 metres covered or less up to 10km. After 10km, the fare increases 10 cents for every 225 metres or less. Forwaiting, the fare is at 10 cents for every 30 seconds or less. Extra charges, not shown on the meter, include:

  • A 50% surcharge of the metered fare recorded between midnight and 6am.

  • A $2.20 surcharge for taxis booked by phone and an additional $1 surcharge for every booking at least half an hour in advance.

  • A $1 surcharge for trips originating from the Restricted Zone between 4pm and 7pm (weekdays) and 12 noon to 3pm (Saturdays) except public holiday

  • A $3 surcharge for a journey from Changi Airport and Seletar Airport. There should be no surcharge for a journey to Changi Airport and Seletar Airport.

  • A $3 surcharge for the purchase of an Area Licence which is needed to enter the Restricted Zone between.7.30am and 6.30pm Monday-Friday and between 7.30am and 2pm Saturday and eve of 5 major public holidays. Passengers need not pay for the Area Licence Fee if taxi already displays a valid monthly or daily Area Licence.

  • A $1 surcharge is levied for all trips in London cabs and a Station Wagon taxi.

  • Extra 10% of fare for payment by credit card. Drivers showing red destination labels on their dashboard or windscreen are changing shift and prefer to accept passengers travelling in that general direction only.


    Using either of the two, it may take 15 minutes or more to do the transaction, but you can avail of a discount of 20 percent.
