Before the advent of oil, the main revenue source in Qatar for many centuries was derived from pearl diving. Throughout the country, one can find monuments to the pearl industry, and one particularly spectacular one can be found at the old port of Al-Ruwais. There you can also see a number of beautiful old open-air mosques.
