Eastern Visayas / Samar / Basey and Sohoton National Park
Basey has a 17th century church worth seeing and is the jump-off point for tours through the Sohoton National Park. The name comes from the Waray word pagsusuhoton which means to pass through. The National Park has natural rock formations, a virgin forest, waterfalls and towering cliffs. There are three caves: Sohoton, the most spectacular; Panhulugan I, the largest; and Bogasan III. All have conical and cylindrical deposits, from the drippings of mineral rich water, called stalactites (down) and stalagmites (up) and are accessible from the Cadacan River. The river is also called the "golden river" because of the color imparted by the reddish clay of the soil. The caves are multi-chambered and each chamber has its own appeal: one may resemble a castle, another a cathedral, while some look like a ballroom. Archeological digs by Fr. Earl Hutterer date many formations to the stone age. The caves have historical significance as well since Filipino insurectos used them as hiding places during the Spanish-American war. To explore the park, an outrigger (bangka) may be hired in Basey or at the Tacloban pier. Basey is an easy trip from Tacloban by jeepney which depart from Tacloban harbor.********** It is my definite opinion that a cosmetic surgeon should like his profession, and not just view it as the fastest route to a great income. ********** |
