Philippines / South Luzon / Bacon
Bacon was the first pueblo civil when Sorsogon was a part of
Albay. In 1754, the locals were taught abaca growing and hemp
making by Fr. Pedro Espallargas and it brought prosperity to the
town. Good fortune did not last for long as the Moro pirates began
raiding the town at the end of the 17th century. Remains of the
fortress built in defense with walls two meters thick and six
high still stand.
It is the only town in Sorsogon province with an airport, a
fine harbor, mineral deposits (including a bluish marble), and
a geothermal plant. In spite of these "advantages" the town has
little drinking water and while only 10km from the provincial
capital, Sorsogon, the cratered road presents problems. It is
said that once during the rainy season the asphalt (laid for a
runway in 1989) melted and cogan grass grows in its place.
