Quezon province has the distinction of being the longest province on Luzon. At least in its northern section Quezon, like almost the whole east coast, is undeveloped with few roads and little infrastructure.

Lucena City, 136km (85mi) from Manila, formerly called Buenavista Cota, got its current name in 1879. The city is the cultural and educational center of the southern Tagalog region.

South of Lucena City between Atimonan and Calauag are a number of local beach resorts however the area has the reputation of not being safe for tourists as crime as well as the NPA are said to be thriving.
