At Mariveles, 173km (l07mi) northwest of Manila, an Export Processing Zone was established during Marcos’ times. In spite of a large number of tax incentives granted by the government, the foreign investor’s excitement about putting up factories there isn’t overwhelming. The reason is seemingly endless labor conflicts.

The infamous Death March of 36,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war started in Mariveles April 9, 1942, after the Japanese had defeated their armies.
