Metro Manila / Transport / Jeepneys
To "board" a jeepney one needs only to move the arm a little. If there is still space in the vehicle, the driver pays a lot of at-tention to potential passengers. To alight, one hisses or knocks on the roof. To get the attention of the driver in order to pay, one uses the Tagalog word for payment, bayad. Many Filipinos do not pay their jeepney fare until they are near their destination since the jeepney may break down or have a flat. More often than not, drivers do return the fares which have already been paid, or at least part of it. The fare rates for jeepney rides are set by the government. They are: The first four kilometers (2.4 miles) 1 peso, then 25 cen-tavos in addition for every kilometer (0.6 miles) in excess. A student pays 65 centavos for the first four kilometers and 20 centavos for every kilometer in excess. Fare rates fluctuate with changes in oil prices. Main Jeepney Routes Virtually all jeepneys plying north-south routes in Metro Manila have to pass Manila City Hall and Liwasang Bonifacio, commonly called Lawton. From there, they spread out to the different destinations in the north and south. Most routes are a combination of a south leg and a north leg. Southbound, the jeepneys split at City Hall either to Del Pilar St, or to Taft Ave. Northbound, the jeepneys split either toward Divisoria, or go through Sta Cruz or through Quiapo to further northern destinations. East-west connections are generally not long and are often only of importance within a single district. All jeepneys plying routes shown in the following lists pass the Tourist Belt. Emphasized places are usually indicated on jeepney windshields and sides. SOUTH-NORTH LINK VIA TAFT / LAWTON Baclaran

SOUTH-NORTH VIA MABINI / DEL PILAR ST Going north, all jeepneys pass Mabini St, going south they pass Del Pilar St. All jeep-neys pass Harrison Plaza, Luneta Park and Lawton (City Hall), except jeepneys marked "Pier" (South Harbor) which do not pass Lawton Baclaran
