/ Attractions around Mandalay / Ava
Of the ancient royal town of Ava, about 20 kilometers southwest
of Mandalay, almost nothing is left. All the major buildings,
which were not destroyed during the earthquake of 1838, had been
transferred first to Amarapura and then to Mandalay. You can still
visit preserved parts of the town wall and an old sentry tower.
It had partly collapsed during the 1838 earthquake, but its lower
part remained standing even though at a distinct angle. Jokingly
this old sentry tower is called the slanting tower of Ava.
