杀 = to kill, to butcher

This word actually is in use as a single-character unit when followed by a specification of who or what is killed.

杀鱼 = sha(1) yu(2) = kill a fish

杀人 = sha(1) ren(2) = kill people 

Another, more poetic expression:

要命 = yao(4) ming(4) = to drive somebody to his death, to kill (figuratively)

天气热要命. = Tian(1) qi(4) re(4) yao(4) ming(4). = The weather is extremely hot. (lit. The weather hot drive to kill.)
