NA-4
('na' in the fourth tone)
There are about 18 standard Chinese
characters that are spoken 'na'. While there is no predominant
sound-determining element, several of the characters spoken 'na' incorporate
the character 内 = nei(4) = inside.
那 = that / demonstrative pronoun for things further away: when
not followed by a noun, the two-character form is preferred:
那个 = na(4)ge(-) = that
那里 = na(4)li(-) = there
The same meaning, but with clearer sound
(recommended for non-native speakers):
那边 = na(4)bian(1) = there, lit. 'on that side' / used
especially when accompanied by a pointing gesture
*****
呐 = (this character is never used alone)
呐喊 = na(4)han(3) = to shout (to call with a load voice,
not because of anger)
