There are some 31 standard Chinese characters with a 'liao' pronunciation. There are two major sound-indicating components that arerather elaborate but do not exist independently, only in combination with radicals: what is right of the fire radical 火 in 燎 (13 occurences), and what is right of the three dots of water radical 氵 in 谬 (7 occurences)

聊 = to chat

But the two-character version is much more common:

聊天 = liao(2)tian(1) = to chat
