('ji' in the fourth tone)

There are some 145 standard Chinese characters with a 'ji' pronunciation, which makes 'ji' one of the most used sounds in spoken Chinese, and puts in into one league with 'shi' and 'yi'.  Major sou.nd-indicating components are: (11 occurences), (11), 齐 (9)

The most frequently encountered 'ji' morphemes are listed below.

Only two are common in the third tone, but they are the most common 'ji' sounds:

= ji(3) = how many, a few

= ji(3) = oneself

More are common in the first tone:

= ji(1) = machine, opportunity

= ji(1) = to strike

垃圾 = la(1)ji(1) = trash

= ji(1) = chicken

The largest number of common 'ji' morphemes is spoken in the fourth tone:

= ji(4) = to calculate

= ji(4) = to remember

= ji(4) = border

国际 = guo(2)ji(4) = international

= ji(4) = jealous

The second tone is not so important for 'ji' morphemes:

= ji(2) = to amount to, and

= ji(2) = emergency

= ji(4) = to remember, to write down as a note / both meanings are equally common; however, longer forms are available

记住 = ji(4)zhu(4) = to remember

记下来 = ji(4) xia(4) lai(2) = to write down

我要记一下 = Wo(3) yao(1) ji(4) yi(1) xia(4) = I want to write this down

让我记一下 = Rang(4) wo(3) ji(4) yi(1) xia(4) = Let me write it down; let me write down something
