FAN-4
('fan' in the fourth tone)
There are about 35 standard Chinese
characters that are spoken 'fan'. Among them are the following characters that
themselves are spoken 'fan' and are sound-determining elements in more
complicated characters: 反 , 犯 , 凡 , 番
饭 = cooked rice
For clarity, the two-character term is
often used:
米饭 = mi(3)fan(4) = cooked rice
吃饭 = chi(1)fan(4) = have a meal (lit. eat rice)
*****
犯 = to offend (not used as a single-character word)
犯罪 = fan(4) zui(4) = to commit a crime
犯法 = fan(4)fa(3) = to break the law
*****
范 = model
As often, the two-character version is
preferred:
模范 = mo(2)fan(4) = model, a good example of behavior
