Some 16 standard Chinese characters can be spoken 'deng'. Ten of them contain as sound-determining component the character 登.

登 = to ascend, to climb, to publish

登记 = deng(1)ji(4) = to check in, to register

登录 = deng(1)lu(4) = to log in (e.g. to access email)

The opposite is:

登出 = deng(1)chu(1) = to log out

录 = lu(4) = to record
