There are 32 standard Chinese characters
with a 'ci' pronunciation. In ten of them, 此 is the sound-indicating
component.
此 = this, here and now
Based on:
止 = zhi(3) = which, academically, means 'to stop', but is never used
alone
Part of:
些 = xie(1) = indefinite amount; dictionaries often give the
translation 'some', but this is misleading; one could NOT say: 些人; however, the
following is OK: 一些人 = yi(1) xie(1) ren(2). If we translate 些 as 'indefinite
amount', this make perfect sense: one indefinite amount of people
