('cha' in the second tone)

There are some 37 standard Chinese characters that are pronounced 'cha'. The most common is: 查 = cha(2) = to check. 查 is also the sound-indicating component in eight other characters spoken as 'cha'.  Six other characters spoken as 'cha' incorporate the character 宅 , apart from a radical, even though 宅 itself is not spoken 'cha'. 宅 = zhai(2) = residence

查 = to check, to examine

查信 = cha(2) xin(4) = check mail (used in email programs)

查看 = cha(2)kan(4) = to view (used for the 'view' command with Microsoft Word)

查找 = cha(2)zhao(3) = to look for (used for the 'find' command with Windows)

调查 = diao(4)cha(2) = to investigate
