(‘bei’ in the fourth tone)
Some 40 standard Chinese characters have a ‘bei’
pronunciation. Major sound-indicating components are; 北 (5 occurences), 贝 (5), 卑 (7)
The most common ‘bei’-spoken words are:
被 = bei(4) = quilt, (used for
sentence constructions in the passiv voice)
北 = bei(2) = north
备 = bei(4) = to prepare
备 = bei(4) = get ready
请准备 = qing(3) zhun(3) bei(4) = (the
'u' in the third tone is spoken as u-e = Please get ready

被 = bei(4) = quilt
When the 被 is not already part of a two-character construction, the following
two-character version is usually preferred:
被子 = bei(4)zi(-) = quilt
被单 = bei(4)dan(1) = bed sheet, quilt
