With construction on the new Vientiane subway in full
swing, travelers to the Laotian capital can soon
expect to get around without being stuck in traffic
congestions. The first leg of this ambitious project
will link the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge with the
city center and then go all the way to the Vientiane
International Airport.
Our photos show the progress of the project near the
downtown Vientiane interchange in front of the Laos
Plaza Hotel. The subway project is pushed through
without the usual aid grants from Japan and Thailand,
and is intended as a showcase of independent Socialist
