In the city of Kangnung is the historical building Ojuk'on where Yi Yul-gok, the great Confucian scholar of the Choson Dynasty, lived with his mother, Shin Saimdang.

Shin Saimdang was not only an ideal daughter, wife, and mother, but also a talented painter, calligrapher, and poet and as such, she is the most widely acclaimed woman of the Choson Dynasty.

The four largest islands are Honshu-, Hokkaido-, Kyu-shu- and Shikoku, together accounting for 97% of Japan's land area.
