Less than
an hour south of Amman is the City of Mosaics. A 6th century map
of the Holy Land is found here in one of the world's largest collections
of ancient mosaics.
A few kilometers
to the southeast of Madaba is mosaic-rich Umm er-Rasas, which
boasts several churches with stunning mosaic floors. It is very
much worth the detour.
From Madaba,
a new road runs southwest to the thermal mineral springs of Zarqa
Ma'in. About 60 springs in Ma'in, with temperatures ranging from
warm to near boiling, eventually empty into the Dead Sea. A modern
luxury hotel and spa operate in Ma'in.
