India
/ Tiruchirapalli / The Town
Situated on
the banks of the Cauvery River, Tiruchirapilli provides a perfect
blend of history, tradition and religion. The Rock Fort dominates
Trichy's landscape. Once the citadel of the Chola kings, the fort
has seen the passing of dynasties. Ruled in turn by the Pallavas
and then the Pandyas, the present fort was built by the Nayak
rulers of Madurai.
Srirangam
(5 km), a temple town closes by, is Trichy's main attaction. The
13th century temple complex with its 21 gopurams is
set on an island in the River Cauvery. Dedicated to the Lord Ranganathaswamy,
the temple is noted for its beautiful sculpture.
Trichy is
also the hub of industrial and commercial activities and is easily
accessible from most towns in Tamil Nadu.
