As of 2007, there are approximately 140,000 inhabitants (0.4%) of France who are living with HIV/AIDS. France, as all EU countries, is under an EU directive to reduce sewage discharge to sensitive areas. As of 2006, France is only 40% in compliance with this directive, placing it as one of the lowest achieving countries within the EU with regard to this wastewater treatment standard. The death of Chantal Sébire revived the debate over euthanasia in France. It was reported on March 21, 2008.
