It is the
largest city in south China and a window for China's opening to
the outside world. It holds the China Export Commodities Fair
each spring and autumn. It is located in the subtropical zone
with a temperate climate.
Pickpockets
By and large, the Chinese do an excellent job in
keeping the country safe for citizens and foreigners
as well.
However, pickpocketing and bag snatching is a serious
problem in Southern cities like Guangzhou, Shenzhen,
and Zhuhai (as well as in Honghkong).
The following is from:

"There is a problem that both Hong Kong and Guangzhou
have that annoys me tremendously—pickpockets. They do
not only go after tourists or foreigners, which means
that they do not discriminate. The bad news is that
they are very good at it because there is so much
bumping and pushing in crowds."
While in many Western countries, the police are not
much interested in going after petty thieves (out of
fear to violate the human rights of suspects), in
China, not only the police but also vigilante groups
combat pickpockets.

Kudos to "Forest"! Keep up the good work!
Exemplatory crime prevention
The Chinese have the reputation of being an unruly
lot, and the country's criminals for being more daring
than those in other countries.
On the other hand, the Communist government of China
is clearly more dedicated towards crime prevention
than the governments of so-called democratic Asian
nations such as Indonesia or the Philippines.
And fortunately, the Chinese government, on a
national, provincial, and local level, has the power
to take drastic measures on a scale so-called
democratic governments never could.
We all want to live in peaceful societies in which we
are not becoming the victims of muggers, and not even
the victims of thieves. This is much more important
than affording some imigrants the opportunity to earn
a living as motorcycle taxi drivers. The city
government of Guangzhou is to be applauded.
